Boat Registration Numbers

All powered boats, personal watercraft, and sailboats are required to display state issued registration numbers, except for vessels documented by the Coast Guard (see below). Numbers should be in a ‘block style’ font, 3 inches in height, and usually with a space or hyphen separating the letters and numbers. They are to be affixed to a visible location on both sides of the bow of the boat.

Coast Guard Documentation

If your boat is documented by the United States Coast Guard, there are specific requirements for the lettering, such as: All lettering must be at least 4” in height. The port of call must displayed and written in all capital letters. The port of call must be the same as on the documentation paperwork. The documentation number must be 3 inches tall and permanently affixed to the interior hull of the vessel. Pricing for documentation numbers is the same as state registration numbers.

The Reality of Cheap Lettering.

Precision Cut

As the name suggests, Precision Cut is cut by a blade from marine-grade vinyl. This is how we make the majority of our lettering because it’s the best way to make lettering for boats. The blade produces a clean, sharp edge and, unlike printing, where the color is only on the surface, the color of marine-grade is part of the vinyl material itself. As such, it’s more durable and provides the best protection against fading. It’s the same grade of material that boat manufacturers use, and the only grade we use.
Here are examples of cheap boat lettering that have cracked and peeled, some after only a short time outdoors. They not only look bad, they are difficult to remove. You’ve made a significant investment in your boat, so why skimp on the one thing that makes it personal? Besides, wouldn’t you rather spend time on your boat having fun with family and friends instead of scraping off cheap boat lettering?

Printed

Much of the lettering made for boats these days is printed. Not because printing is better for boat lettering, but mostly because printing is easier and more profitable for the companies that sell lettering. Unfortunately, printed decals are not ideal for boats because they’re not as durable as precision cut vinyl lettering. There are ways to make printing more durable, such as using high performance decal material, premium inks, and UV laminates, all of which add to the cost, but are essential for maximum durability. No matter what you see elsewhere, there is no such thing as ‘marine grade’ printed lettering. Printed decals are primarily used for vehicle ‘wraps’, which require a more pliable decal material with a lower adhesion. Therefore, they do not hold up as well against the outdoor elements. We offer printed decals when the job calls for it, such as gradient colors or photographic images. Of course, we use the best quality decal material and premium solvent inks. We also offer a UV laminate to protect against intense sun exposure, especially in southern climates.
